Coroner’s finding on four-year-old leads update

Today's media update focuses on the coroner's finding into the 2005 death of "Rory" a four-year-old known to DHS. The findings were released on Melbourne Cup Eve. Coroner Jennifer Tregent noted that, even on a "cursory review" of the Victorian Ombudsman's recent report on child protection in the Loddon Mallee region, many of the concerns raised in the management of Rory's case "remain prevalent" (see pp.34–35 of report, link below).

Ombudsman’s report on Loddon Mallee child protection leads media update

Today's media update focuses exclusively on the Ombudsman's report on child protection in the Loddon Mallee region that was tabled in the Victorian Parliament on Tuesday 25 October.
The Ombudsman found "a practice has developed where the drive to meet numerical targets has overshadowed the interest of children despite evidence that they may be at risk".
Centre CEO Dr Lynette Buoy and Professor Cathy Humphreys were interviewed about the Ombudsman's findings for Wednesday's edition of ABC Radio National AM (see link below).

The Ombudsman’s report on child protection in the Loddon Mallee region tabled in Parliament today sends a stark warning to the State Government that the pressure to produce acceptable numbers in reports is coming before the safety of children in Victoria’s child protection system.

Coverage of Hayley inquest continues in Thursday media update

Today's media update again focuses exclusively on the findings of the Coroner regarding the death of Hayley, a toddler known to child protection who died of injuries that were inflicted at her home in July 2009. The Coroner has made six recommendations for change to help prevent deaths in similar circumstances in the future.

Calls for church abuse inquiry lead Friday media update

Today's media update leads with calls for an independent inquiry into child abuse by clergy in the Catholic church in Victoria. The calls follow the recent extension of the reporting deadline for the Protecting Victoria's Vulnerable Children Inquiry (late Jan. 2012), and reports that the Inquiry may examine aspects of abuse within religious organisations.
Mandatory reporting, and speaking up about suspected abuse also feature.
