DSS Announce Bridging Funding

Scott Morrison has announced the Government will provide new bridging funding to ensure continuity of front line community services following the completion of the comprehensive tendering process conducted last year as part of the Department of Social Services, New Way of Working for Grants.

The CEO, Board & staff of the Centre for Excellence in Child & Family Welfare wish to express our condolences to the family of Lady April Hamer who passed away this week at age 93.
Lady Hamer was a long time advocate for Victoria's Vulnerable Children including serving as a Board Member at the Centre during the 1970's.

International Foster Care Conference – Sydney – November 2015

The 18th Biennial International Foster Care Conference “Tell Someone Who Cares” will take place in Sydney, Australia.
The Conference dates are November 8-11, 2015. The 2015 International Conference will provide an opportunity to showcase foster, kinship & relative care in a National Australian context and international keynote speakers will present the important, innovative work being undertaken in other parts of the world.

Improving the Health of Vulnerable Children

On Friday 12th December, the Centre for Excellence in Child & Family Welfare attended a meeting with the Commissioner for Children and Young People, FCAV and Medibank Health Solutions in relation to "Improving the Health of Vulnerable Children".
Following the meeting Medibank has confirmed that it has the following policy in relation to children in kinship and guardianship arrangements (not fostercare):

Residential Care Workforce Project

The Centre has been funded by DHS to undertake the 2014 Residential Care Workforce Project.
The objectives of the project are to:
- Profile the residential care workforce
- Identify the skills gap of Residential Care Workers
- Develop recruitment and retention strategies
- Develop training strategy and minimum qualifications recommendations

The Centre visits the Melbourne Children’s Court

The Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare would like to thank Judge Peter Couzens, President of the Children’s Court of Victoria, the Magistrates and court staff for the opportunity to visit the Children’s Court in Melbourne. The Centre was taken for a tour of the Children’s Court including the Family and Criminal Division. The Family Division hear child protection matters and the Criminal Division youth justice matters. The Family Division was very busy on the day with Magistrates hearing new matters and contest hearings.

DHS Update – Preparation for Bushfire Season

The 2014 bushfire season starts in December. Information letters will be sent out in the upcoming weeks to all foster and kinship carers. The letters will set out required activities for fire season preparation.
Community Service Organisations (CSOs) who contract manage children and young people in foster care and kinship care should start planning for the upcoming bushfire season.
